Pixie Van Dimple

Listens in to Miss O’Connor’s Year 6 Class discussion!

I want to hear what the class was talking about afterwards! says Pixie Van Dimple excitedly!

Ok! Let’s imagine we are listening in….

Miss O’Connor: What a fantastic book!

The year 6 group are intrigued! There is excited chatter and ten hands go up!

Can we really be invaded by Okupator bugs? can we still play computer games? What does vasoconstriction mean? Where is Belarus? I know all about online safety! Yes and I go to coding club on Thursdays! It’s a bit scary! I love that it rhymes! My mum is always telling me to put my phone down! I know it is not true as I have been on my phone longer than 2.32 hours and I was ok!

You were taking notes then ! says Miss O’Connor!

Let’s talk about the book and what it means, says Miss O’Connor

Who can tell me some things about the character of the book, Pixie Van Dimple? A description and what we think she is like, what she likes?

Who can tell me about some of the themes in the book? What do you think are the real dangers of too much screen time and being online?

Lets talk about the style of writing, and the format, and structure of the writing!

Lets discuss any of the language or the words you don’t understand or are not sure about..

What do you think is the main message in the book?

How do you think the book makes you feel?

What would make you feel more confident online?

What are the subjects talked about in the book? What do you think Artificial Intelligence is? Can you think of any other new technologies we are using or might use in the future? What would we use them for?

Miss O’Connor’s questions had the class in a spin! They were very animated and had lots of ideas and thoughts, some were confused and some were extremely informed about privacy and keeping safe online, and many loved the idea of clever new technologies! They worked in groups to discuss different issues and then spoke about them to the rest of the class! We won’t tell you what they came up with but will let you come up with your own ideas!

At the end of the discussion Miss O’Connor asked the class to do a task and write a book review about the book and give it a star rating out of 5! They talked a while about how to write a good book review https://www.booktrust.org.uk/books-and-reading/tips-and-advice/writing-tips/writing-tips-for-teens/how-to-write-a-book-review/

Then she said they could take the Pixie Van Dimple Wordsearch home with them to do – instead of being on their phones, tablets and consoles, just for a while! They could ask their parents to have a go with them just to make it more fun!

Can you write a book review and send it to Pixie? It could be about your favourite book or even better, Pixie’s book! We will post them on Pixie’s blog or Instagram!

Whatever you do kids, it will be fantastic!
