IDK what is going on! We are being infiltrated by A.C R.O.N.Y.M.S ! PVD (no, not ‘the common eye condition’ !) but our very own Pixie Van Dimple, just cannot stop talking and texting in abbreviations and initial letters littered lavishly LOL (is that ‘laugh out loud or ‘lots of love’ ? ! Pixie’s stories feature one or two ! Just read them and see! What about AI for a start… that’s artificial intelligence of course!!
As an aside, and if you have a preteen, teen, like me and /or a YA, (come on keep up), then you might want to read this so you can decipher their conversations (not like you are spying or anything, but just being aware and in the loop and more equipped to join in the chat ! – what DO teens talk about??)
The advent of smartphones (yes, ‘a wonder of technological evolution’ ) has spawned a whole new world of language, permeating across the whole internet, and the globe, made up of acronyms and coded messages. Depending on which ‘club’ you belong to or which group you are in, you will find a dedicated set of acronyms decipherable only if you are ITK -in the know!
Take gaming for example – these are the top 10 gaming acronyms:

We all do it to speed up messaging, and Tweet more stuff (!) and communicate within our own community – it’s cool and quicker to type and effectively a language of choice!
It’s not a ‘new’ thing as in Education or in government bodies and departments, or NASA,, and in lots of corporations (BBC, NBC, CEO, MD), institutions and industries, science and medicine, they are all over the place and have been for ages! We don’t always want to write or type out the whole name of the company, like the BBC as it takes AGES to type the British Broadcasting Corporation, so an abbreviation is much more convenient.
Now who can tell us what NASA stands for? and COP as in COP 26 or NATO, SCUBA, YOLO, AWOL, SPF, BAME, EYFS, NCIS. CSI !? And what about more tech? AR, VR, VAR, SR, ML, MI, SEO…. KISS (What?) oh ok, well there are only about 65,000 tech acronyms apparently!
‘Back to Pixie, you might implore‘ ! We are in danger of falling down a rabbit hole… We were going to talk about Pixie’s new book and a particular acronym which features in the drama… and I am talking EPIC !! E.S.P.È.R.E. – now when you get to read the book you will realise the significance of it. In the meantime, I can tell you that ESPÈRE in French means ‘HOPE’ and that is one thing we need to hang on to in life!
